11/30/10 whiotv: Airman Wounded In Afghanistan Dies A local airman who was wounded in Afghanistan last year has passed away. Sr. Airman Tre Porfirio, 22, passed away while visiting friends over the Thanksgiving weekend in Missouri. News Center 7 first reported in February that Porfirio was stationed with the 88th Communication Squadron Voice Network Systems when he was shot by insurgents in the chest and twice in the abdomen. Doctors took unusual measures to save his life by removing his pancreas, a procedure that had never been performed before on a trauma patient. The cause of Porfirio’s death is unknown.

11/30/10 AP: Afghan gunman had no criminal background The Afghan border policeman who killed six American service members during a training mission had been on the force for three years and had no criminal background, the Interior Ministry said Tuesday.

11/30/10 AP: Coalition ramps up air war in Afghanistan Once sharply curtailed because of complaints over civilian casualties, U.S. and NATO forces have ramped up the air war in Afghanistan since this summer. Coalition aircraft dropped 1,000 bombs and missiles in October — one of the highest monthly totals of the 9-year-old war. Despite large increases in sorties and weapons fired, the number of civilians killed in air operations is slightly down this year — NATO officials say — because of coalition restrictions on engaging insurgents.

Justin Gaertner touched down in Afghanistan, into the Helmand province, a war zone of Taliban insurgent strongholds...The second bomb blew. Triggered remotely, it caught the Marines by surprise. Gaertner's legs, and those of a friend he had met at Camp Pendleton, were blown to pieces. A third Marine was killed.

11/30/10 JURIST: Second US soldier charged in probe into Afghan civilian deaths Major General Curtis Scaparrotti of the US Army on Monday ordered a court-martial for Staff Sergeant David Bram stemming from a larger case involving five soldiers accused of killing Afghan citizens. Bram is charged with conspiracy to commit assault and battery, unlawfully striking another solider, violating a lawful order, dereliction of duty, cruelty, maltreatment and endeavoring to impede an investigation.

11/30/10 AP: Wisconsin Army medic killed in Afghanistan Greg Gassen says his son, Jacob, who turned 21 on Nov. 19, was serving as a medic in his first tour of duty when he was killed. U.S. Army officials broke the news to Gassen at his Beaver Dam home Monday afternoon. Gassen says he doesn't yet know the details surrounding his son's death.

11/30/10 birminghammail: Son of Birmingham councillor shot in Taliban ambush in Afghanistan THE soldier son of a Birmingham Labour councillor was seriously wounded when his patrol was ambushed in Afghanistan. Lance Sergeant Vincent Hockley was one of five Irish Guardsmen shot in the attack which left one of his colleagues, 22-year-old Christopher Davies, dead.

The Rafale was operating from the aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle, which is stationed in the Arabian Sea to support the fight in Afghanistan.

Rushing outside, I saw a tall column of smoke just 60 feet away, and soldiers walking toward me carrying Spc. Jeremy Kuehl. His squad had been ready to go on patrol when it triggered a homemade bomb, an improvised explosive device. PV2 James Stenett was injured in the face; Kuehl lost a leg.

The attack took place as Abdullah Ahmadzai, a member of Logar province's governing council, was driving into the provincial capital of Puli Alam. Ahmadzai's brother and cousin were also killed and a bodyguard was injured, said Din Mohammad Darwesh, a spokesman for the provincial government.

11/29/10 businessweek: NATO captures insurgent leader in east Afghanistan NATO says it has captured a leader of a Pakistan-based Taliban faction closely tied to al-Qaida. The military coalition said Sunday the militant, from the Haqqani network, was picked up on Nov. 25 in the eastern Afghan province of Khost.
